What Is IGI Certification and Why Does It Matter?

When you buy a diamond from Brilliance Direct, it comes with an IGI certificate. But what exactly is that, and why does it matter?

### What Is IGI?

IGI stands for the International Gemological Institute. Founded in 1975, it is one of the world's largest and most respected independent gemological laboratories. IGI has grading laboratories in Antwerp, New York, Mumbai, Hong Kong, and many other cities worldwide.

IGI is considered the gold standard for certifying lab-grown diamonds specifically. It was one of the first major labs to develop comprehensive grading standards for lab-grown stones.

### What Does an IGI Certificate Tell You?

Every IGI certificate includes:

- **Shape and cut style** — e.g., Round Brilliant, Oval, Cushion
- **Measurements** — exact dimensions in millimeters
- **Carat weight** — precise to the hundredth of a carat
- **Color grade** — D through Z scale
- **Clarity grade** — FL (flawless) through I3
- **Cut grade** — Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor
- **Polish and symmetry** — how well-finished the facets are
- **Fluorescence** — how the diamond reacts under UV light
- **Origin** — whether the diamond is lab-grown or mined

The certificate also includes a unique report number that can be verified on the IGI website at any time.

### Why You Should Never Buy a Diamond Without Certification

Without a certificate, you're taking the seller's word for the quality of the stone. You have no way to verify carat weight, color, or clarity. You can't compare it to another diamond fairly. And you can't insure it accurately.

A certificate is your proof of purchase, your quality guarantee, and your protection.

### IGI vs GIA

GIA (Gemological Institute of America) is another highly respected grading lab, traditionally the standard for mined diamonds. Both are excellent. IGI has become the dominant certification body for lab-grown diamonds due to its early investment in lab-grown grading standards and its global reach.

At Brilliance Direct, every diamond we sell is IGI certified. You'll always know exactly what you're getting.
